1. Domain name - This is the URL you type into the browser that brings up your Web site, i.e. www.yourdomain.com. You will need to choose a domain name and register it. There is a registration fee which must be renewed depending on how long you want to register the domain name. Before you can register your domain you will first need to check if the name is available and has not already been registered and is being used by someone else. This will require a little bit of research. If the domain name you desire is not available then you will need do one of two things:
a) Choose another name that is available, or
b) Approach the owner of the domain and see if he/she is willing to sell it to you. I had to do that with my domain name "www.bluemoonwebdesign.com".
2. Web site host - After a domain name has been chosen and registered next you have to find a Web hosting company to host your Web site and put it up on the Internet. There will be a monthly fee charged by the hosting company. The cost will depend upon the needs of your Web site.
3. Web development - Next you will need to design and build your site. In many instances your Web site will be all your potential customer will see of your company. It is your online brochure, it represents you and the products or services your company has to offer. Therefore it is very important that you have a professional looking Web site. You want your potential customers to look at you as a reputable company and have confidence in doing business with you. If you plan on doing e-commerce with your site you will also need a shopping cart.
4. Search Engine Optimization - What good is it to have a wonderful Web site if nobody can find it? The next thing you absolutely must do is make your site search engine friendly. This is the most important step in creating your online presence on the Web. Good search engine optimization (a.k.a. SEO) is an absolute must otherwise your site will become lost among all those millions of sites out there.
